Seriously, seriously good new wines!

An amazing range of wines from New Zealand have just landed with us. One sip and we were hooked, so we're really excited that they're now here!

A couple of weeks ago we were very fortunate to meet Tim and Judy Finn, owners of the Neudorf wineTim & Judy Finn estate in Nelson, on New Zealand's South Island. Tim and Judy were pioneers in Nelson, the sunniest region in New Zealand, where they are now producing beautiful wines.

The story began in 1978, when Tim and Judy decided that they wanted to start making wine, despite the New Zealand fine wine industry being fairly non existent at the time, and despite their limited experience. In fact, Tim trained in animal behaviour and Judy came from a journalism background, so it was a new adventure to say the least! But as they say - 'We did have youth (temporary), self belief (unwarranted) and friends!'

It was definitely a case of trial and error as the couple planted many different varieties to discover which would work best in the region. The hard work paid off and now, over 30 years on, they have a set of wines that are amongst the most highly regarded wines in New Zealand.

Sauvignon Blanc Neudorf 2014, Nelson

A New Zealand Sauvignon that is bucking the trend. Tim and Judy have developed a more interesting glass of Sauvignon Blanc that offers an abundance of tropical fruit flavours with beautiful balance, creamy texture and the same zingy acidity that we love in New Zealand Sauvignon. A delicious match with seafood or goats cheese.

Chardonnay Neudorf 2014, Nelson

A truly beautiful Chardonnay, frankly one of the best I've tasted at this level. The butterscotch, ripe green apple and melon aromas pull you into the glass which is full of ripe yet delicate stone fruit flavours coated in creamy vanilla. All balanced by citrus freshness that pulls the flavour right through to the lengthy finish. If you deserve a treat, make it this, with roast chicken!

Neudorf Wine RangeRiesling Neudorf 2012, Moutere

It's not just the low alcohol in this wine that lends itself to a second glass, the flavour is just delicious! An intense and crisp Riesling with beautiful balance between fresh citrus fruit flavours and richer honey and marmalade notes. Best drunk with spicy food such as Thai.

Chardonnay Neudorf 2012, Moutere

This has to be New Zealand's finest Chardonnay. It would rival any top flight Chardonnay from around the world - it's as simple as that. A truly seductive Chardonnay where a complex medley of flavours including rich stone fruits, fresh baked bread and cashew nuts greet the taste buds. You'll also find depth, structure and length which will enable this wine to live happily in your cellar, until you want to crack it open for a special occasion! Seabass or creamy dishes will work best as a food match.

Pinot Noir 'Tom's Block' Neudorf 2012, Nelson

A generous wine with a deep complex nose of bramble fruit and mocha. Oozing with opulent dark fruit flavours, gorgeous texture, delicious balance and fine tannins on the palate. Lingering after taste. There is simply no better match for roast lamb!

Pinot Noir Neudorf 2011, Moutere

It's often said that Pinot Noir is one of the most difficult grape varieties to work with and get right. But, in my opinion Neudorf have nailed it with this, their flagship Pinot Noir. A soft, richly-fruited nose flows through to the palate which is rich and concentrated with layers of dark cherry, berry and warm spice flavours. The texture is silky, but the fine tannins give structure which will allow the wine to improve in bottle over the next few years. Match with the finest leg of lamb you can buy!
