Chartreuse is a liqueur made by Carthusian monks since the 1740s, made from distilled alcohol aged with 130 herbal extracts. It is named after their 'Grande Chartreuse' monastery which is in the 'Chartreuse Mountains' near to Grenoble. It is now produced in a factory in the nearby town of Voiron, but essentially is still exactly the same as it was back in the 1740s. Green Chartreuse is the name that is given to the colour - chartreuse - and comes from the addition of chlorophyll - can you believe it! Its sister - yellow chartreuse - is slightly milder and sweeter in flavour and aroma. Chartreuse is one of those VERY rare indeed liqueurs that actually continues to improve with age in the bottle.
