The Botanist is distilled on the Scottish West Coast Island of Islay using nine 'classic' botanicals and augmented by twenty two wild & local botanicals (cue lots of arm waving a la David Bellamy). Gin is all about the botanicals, they define the gin. The list of local ones include bog myrtle, creeping thistle, heather flowers, Lady's bedstraw & mugwort leaves. All something Harry Potter might concoct! Distillation is slow in a very rare 'Lomond' pot still called 'Ugly Betty' (all stills seem to have a name!), which looks like "an oversized upside down dustbin made of copper". As you would expect, the gin is very complex using this many botanicals. Juniper led with soft, pretty, perfumed floral notes, a dusting of pepper and just a hint of sea breeze. The finish is dry and sharp. Excellent as a G&T!
