Babich Tasting with Dinah Kinnear

Babich Tasting with Dinah Kinnear
At the Papermills Wansford

Sauvignon Blanc 2012 Marlborough
This is the classic label, Joe babich has always stated he hates acidic wines and hates sweet wines even more, so his wines are fruit driven, but bone dry! Delightful appealing citrus fruits, but ripe, passion fruits, and green leaf.Broad and ripe on the palate, almost tropical, but very good balance of acidity and fruit.

Sauvignon Blanc 2012 Black Label Marlborough
Slightly better selection of fruit, plus 7% goes into old oak barrels to help broaden the palate. More restrained on the nose, a little more floral and riper fruits. Tropical fruits, almost mango, long finish.

Sauvignon Blanc 2012 Wakefield Downs Marlborough
A single vineyard wine, that gets quite a long skin contact to give the wine more mouthfeel. A little tomatoe leaf character, with hints of tropical fruits, melon and mango on the palate, mouth filling fruit, really delicious, great length, lovely balance.

Chardonnay 2010 Gimblett Gravels Hawkes Bay
Gimblett Gravels is NZ's only appelation, it is old river beds. Babich has big red grape varities, Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay planted here. This is the partly oaked style, 30% is barrel fermented, with about 30% being new barrels. Elegant peach, nutty/toasty nose, melon, apple, roasted nut character, good length, great balance. So much more subtle than most NZ Chardonnay.

Pinot Noir 2010 Marlborough
Fermented in open top fermentors, 7 months in oak barrels, ripe red fruits, hints of violets, cherry fruit. Good intensity on the palate, spicy and concentrated red fruits, great mouthfeel, silky and power yet great balance and a long finish.

Syrah 2008 Gimblett Gravels Hawkes Bay
Is going to be as important to Nz as a grape variety as Pinot oir is. Produced is open top fermentors to produce a more subtle wine. Dark in colour, opulent lifted nose, sweet dark fruits and appealing with a spicy character. Red and black fruits on the palate, bold yet supple in the mouth, very spicy/peppery finish. Really good length.

Merlot Cabernet 2009 Gimblett Gravels Hawkes Bay
60% Merlot 40% Cabernet Sauvignon,60% oak aged. Riper fuller, very plummy dark fruits, quite lush! Sweet dark fruits on the palate, rich and concentrated, supple on the palate and long finish, with just a hint of spice. Really good balance again.
