Napa wines so good, they're naughty!

Napa Valley is California's most famous wine producing region and this tasting proved why!

Welcome to the world of Napa Valley - a legendary region famed for its wealth of fine wines, glamorous buildings and slick lifestyle. It's the glitzy wine region of California, that's blessed with such an incredible reputation that more people visit here than Disneyland each year!

We're going to be running a promotion throughout September 2014 to shine the spotlight on this impressive region, so today we tasted a wide array of wines so we could select the very best to promote. Here's the final line up we've plumped for;

Clos du Val

Clos du Val began its story on 150 acres of vineyards planted on some of the finest land in the now famous Stag's Leap district, they then went on to buy a further 180 acres of vineyards in the slightly cooler climate Carneros region. So now they use the best best quality Napa fruit to produce handcrafted, estate wines famed for their elegance, balance and complexity.

Ariadne (Semillion/Sauvignon Blanc) 2010

It's got a very typical Semillon nose with a grapefruit and citrus filled palate. We love the waxy texture too as its so classically associated with top quality Semillon. Try for something different!

Pinot Noir 2011

Lovely savoury and mushroom aromas lead you into the glass. The palate is beautifully layered with playful ripe red fruits mingling with an abundance of herbs and spice with great depth. It's undeniably new world but it's got some serious old world sophistication!

Zinfandel 2012

Sheer depth of damson fruit on the nose. Big and spicy on the palate with a proper cracked black pepper and wild strawberry fruit flavour. Very well made.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

There's a real punch of sweet black fruits here. It's big and chewy but with a nice juicy elegance.

Frog's Leap

Frog's Leap is undeniably one of the Napa's most recognised wine producers but the reason they have earned such an enviable reputation is clear throughout all of their wines. The philosophy at this Rutherford based estate is to have fun making elegant wines with superb balance, and they truly do achieve this. Plus, they farm their grapes organically which makes them even more appealing. Not to mention the very cute little 'ribbit' message printed on each cork! We really love this range of wines and hope very much that you will do too.

Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Incredibly clean and fresh on the nose leading to a zesty, well balanced palate with refreshing acidity, lemon and pear drop flavours. What's really staggering though is the length, it goes on forever and is so elegant.

Zinfandel 2011

An interesting an perhaps unexpected style of Californian Zinfandel. Complex and interesting nose with lots of black cherry, spice and pepper aromas. Wonderfully restrained fruit flavours, a gentle roasted nut and herby twist on the palate with great balance and a long finish.

Merlot 2011

The aroma burst with tiny blackcurrant fruits, very leafy too which flows through to the pretty and pure blackcurrant fruit palate. It's very minerally which keeps it all balanced. Elegant and classy - very serious kit. If you like Bordeaux, you'll love this!

Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

For a Cabernet this has a really velvety, cashmere mouthfeel and is drenched in blackcurrant fruit. Very well made with a lengthy, rich, chewy grip on the finish to remind you that you're drinking a Cab!  You'll struggle to find a better Cabernet anywhere at this price than this!

Atalon

An estate owned by the Jackson Family, the 9th largest producer in California, so there really is a lot of experience behind these wines! Rather than focus on a single, small plot of land, Atalon explores Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc from the four corners of Caifornia's most famous appellation. The result is wines with soul and personality.

Pauline's Cuvee 2010

A highly perfumed Bordeaux blend with a hint of raspberry jam thrown into the mix. It's all about sweet fruit on the palate with good freshness. Be warned that it's a gobstopper though. In Philip's words 'it's all boob and bum!'

Domaine Carneros

Domaine Carneros was established in 1987, a joint venture between Champagne Taittinger and Kobrand Corporation (one of the USA's key wine players). Claude Taittinger visited the Carneros region and saw the potential to produce world class sparkling and still Pinot Noir wines and so this estate was formed!

Pinot Noir Avant Garde 2012

An extrememly aromatic Pinot Noir with oodles of cherry and raspberry fruit on the nose, whilst the palate is full of bright, spiced fresh fruit and is silky smooth, a result of its 10 months spent in French oak.

Brut 2010

A wine that very much reminds you of the Taittinger style  - light, elegant and fresh. It's the only sparkling wine in California made solely from Carneros fruit and is also California's most famous sparkler!

We can't wait to introduce you to this stunning selection of wines in the shop and also through some wine tasting events we're putting together - keep your eyes peeled!
