A short guide to a unique fortified wine

What is Madeira?

Madeira is a fortified Portuguese wine made in the Madeira Islands.

How is it made?

It's a really unique wine making process as it involves heating the wine up to temperatures as high as 60*c for an extended period of time, and deliberately exposing the wines to some levels of oxidation.

What is it made from?

The major grape varieties for Madeira production are (from driest to sweetest) Sercial, Tinta Negra, Verdelho, Bual and Malvasia. You'll find these on Madeira labels so it's easier to pick the style you like.

How long is it aged for?

You'll find these terms on Madeira labels too, which indicate how long the wine has spent maturing (ageing).

  • Finest - 3 years (usually only used in cooking)
  • Reserve - 5 years
  • Special Reserve - 10 years
  • Extra Reserve - over 15 years
  • Vintage or Frasqueira - 20 years
  • Colheita or Harvest - from a single vintage, but aged for less than vintage

What do you drink it with?

Try dry styles can be drink on their own as an aperitif, the sweeter styles can be enjoyed with a dessert.
