Chairman of the Champagne Academy

Philip Amps has a new title!

We are delighted to announce that Philip Amps was elected Chairman of the Champagne Academy in February, which coincides with the Academy celebrating its 60th Anniversary. Every year the leading 16 Grande Marque Champagne Houses select 16 candidates from the trade to travel out to France to study and learn everything about Champagne.

During the course the candidates learn about the history, the soil, vine, grape, all the way to the finished Champagne. There are daily theory and tasting examinations culminating in the successful candidates gaining the Champagne Academy Diploma.

To continue the education of each student, the Academy under the control of the chairman, organises tastings and dinners here in the UK. This year Philip will be hosting events at The Lanesborough in London, aboard Royal Yacht Britannia in Edinburgh, The Vox in Birmingham, The Chester Grosvenor and an Irish Dinner in Dublin!

"I have been a lifelong fan of Champagne and made it my personal crusade to be selected for the course by writing to all the houses each year, sending my CV and pleading my case as to why I should get selected. After 3 years of repeat letter writing I was called onto the course in 1997, with 6 days' notice as someone dropped out from the original selection. Those days in Champagne on the course remain one of the highlights of my career in the wine industry and I passed the exam with a distinction.

The Champagne Academy has become a very influential tool for my business. It is also a wonderful platform for networking with other people from the industry and other Champagne Houses.

I will spend my year as Chairman in 2016 to move the Academy forward and hopefully instil my passion for the Academy in others." - Philip Amps
