Mount Edward Winery, Gibbston Valley, Central Otago

Duncan Forsyth has installed Yoshiaki Sato as the full time winemaker to work under Duncan’s guidance.
 

Mount Edward remains one of the outstanding estates in Central Otago and sets the standards for many of us to follow. At the heart of their success is the passion that both Duncan and Yoshi bring to the estate. Their enthusiasm for what they are doing is infectious.

First we tasted the three Rieslings; what stood out was that all three were made identically by the same man, 100% fermented in stainless steel, but from different vineyard sites. All three were outstandingly brilliant, simply delicious.
Riesling in Central Otago is generally the latest ripening variety and to get properly ripe, it needs a long autumn and so this is a very marginal area for producing Riesling. But when it is right, they are the very best.
 
Riesling 2009
Lifted nose with hints of sweetness, abundant citrus fruits, floral and appealing. Wonderful mouthfeel and a hugely long finish. Delicious, simply stunning.

Riesling 2011, The Drumlin
16-year old vines that are planted on the slope next to the winery. White peach and lychee, floral, lovely opulent flavours, peachy on the palate with hints of tangerine and nectarine underpinned by good minerality. Great length and simply delicious.

Riesling Morrison Vineyard 2011

Ripe apples, blossom and slightly herby. Peach, apricot, very intense palate with great minerality leading into a sherbet/lemonade finish.

Pinot Gris 2011
40% is aged in neutral oak to provide texture. Ripe nose, pear and apple, herby and minerally on the palate but retaining a big textured mouthfeel. Long spicy finish.

Pinot Noir 2009
Lifted red fruits. Ripe and full with layers of herby, spicy red fruits on the palate. Lovely structure and very very drinkable.

Pinot Noir 2010

Darker colour with dominating dark fruits, more herby on the nose with hints of violets and wild strawberries. Bold on the palate with dark fruits but not aggressive tannins. A big wine but with really good balance.

Pinot Noir Morrison Vineyard 2010
An extra six months barrel ageing for this single vineyard wine. Wild strawberry fruit nose, very concentrated and intense dark fruits on the palate. Very supple tannins for 2010 and a long spicy finish. Very elegant and approachable for a reserve wine.

Pinot Noir Muirkirk Vineyard 2010
Riper dark fruits, a very savoury palate. Much more intense than the Morrison Vineyard. Really good length, a wonderful minerality and a long supple finish.
