Gibbston Valley Wines Ltd, Gibbston Valley, Central Otago

The vineyard was started planting in 1981 and with as with all sites with mature vineyards, the quality of the wines seems to be high.

Add in the value of a good winemaker and in Christopher Keys they have a passionate dynamic winemaker who allows the wines to express themselves rather than too much intervention.

We tasted a large selection of wines which showed us what the wines are capable of. We have selected the stand out wines.

Pinot Gris 2011
Herby minerality, great pear fruit flavours and excellent texture in the mouth. Long spicy finish. To demonstrate how well this wine ages, Christopher opened a bottle of the 2007. That was simply delicious and still as fresh as the day it was made.

Chardonnay 2011
Elegant nose of peach and subtle hints of apricot, gently wrapped in a vanilla coat. Lovely balanced palate with just a hint of roasted nut on the finish. If only all Chardonnays in New Zealand were made this way!

We tasted eight Pinot Noirs, all were exceptional, giving examples of how different vineyard sites affect ultimately what ends up in the bottle and again, how a gentle touch on the wines from the winemaker makes all the difference.

Pinot Noir 2010
Tight red berry fruits intermingled with dark fruits. Huge weight in the mouth but the tannins were remarkably supple for 2010. Yet again, it is a mark of the careful winemaking that has resulted in the supple tannins.

Pinot Noir Schoolhouse 2009
Opulent summer fruit aromas, concentrated sweet fruits on the palate, lovely structure with layers of character finishing with a wonderful balance between spice and fruit.

Pinot Noir Le Maitre 2007
Lifted nose of dark fruits with notes of wild strawberry, very elegant palate of intense dark fruits and great layers of herbs and spices leading to an excellent minerality on the finish, yet the fruit flavours were to the fore.

This was an exceptional range of wines.
