Born from Barbera and Nebbiolo, the Albarossa grape can trace its roots back to 1938. Grown by Castello Banfi in the Piemote region, La Lus (The Light) is the highest expression of this innovative varietal. There are not many plantings (less than 10 hectares in Italy) of this unusual grape variety but this example has to be a contender for the best. It’s modern, fresh, fruity and complex, showing typical flavours of red berries, cherries and jammy plum. Subtle notes of vanilla and liquorice come from oak ageing. Full bodied yet velvety soft. Ideal paired with rich pasta dishes or flavoursome meaty stews such as ragout.
